A charitable gift of land is one of the largest, most generous offerings a person can make. A charitable gift will leave a lasting legacy and will ensure your desire to protect your farmland indefinitely. Although it requires relinquishing control of the land without financial profit, you will receive tax benefits and be contributing to Genesis Land Conservancy and the mission of the organization.

George Burton began farming in 1953, mostly mixed farming with cattle, and then developed a certified seed business which he operated until his partial retirement in 1994. George had noticed the dilemma of maintaining a farm beginning in 1968. On later travels around the world, he noticed that other countries used long-term leases. This made him wonder if such an arrangement would work on the prairies, eliminating the need for young farmers to carry the debt burden associated with land ownership.

"I have always felt the need for something like that," Burton said. "The main reason for owning land is to have security of tenure, but there are other ways of doing it."

George Burton has been a supporter of Genesis Land Conservancy from the very beginning. It was only natural for him to want to become involved and help the organization.

In the fall of 2000, George and his wife, Marian, decided to contribute two quarters of farmland to Genesis. Like many older farmers, he doesn't have anyone to pass the farm to. Their four children had helped with the seed business, but none of them wanted to make farming a career. The gift of land was a viable option addressing both environmental and land tenure issues.

If you choose to give a gift, of land or other, you will recieve a tax credit for this, at its fair market value*, for more information on this contact your accountant.

*Fair market value generally means the highest price that a property would bring, expressed in dollars, in an open and unrestricted market
