Job Title: GenAssist Value-Chain Champion (part-time)
- Location: To be based from a home office in central Saskatchewan, preferably within 2 hours of Saskatoon.
- Reports To: Executive Director of Earthcare Connections / Genesis Land Conservancy (indirectly to GenAssist Steering Committee)
- Compensation: 20 hours per week paid at $19.23 per hour + 4% vacation pay
- Duration: The Value-Chain Champion position is a funded, 3-year term starting July 1, 2009. Significant possibilities exist for longer-term employment via revenue from product sales and other sources / funds.
- Function: To manage the day to day operations of the GenAssist project and to develop the business, marketing, and educational activities under the guidance of the GenAssist Steering Committee.
- Learn about and understand the GenAssist project plan
- Create a personal work plan in collaboration with, and report activities to the GenAssist Steering Committee.
- Manage the business planning process in collaboration with a consultant.
- Manage the development of the GenAssist livestock products brand, ensuring that food products are consistent with that brand.
- Explore distribution channels and establish relationships with buyers and potential buyers.
- Administer promotional and educational materials including advertising under the direction of the Steering Committee.
- Monitor quality control in accordance with the standards developed by the Steering Committee, including animal welfare.
- Establish and maintain accounting and bookkeeping systems, including financial reporting in collaboration with a local accountant.
- Attend Steering Committee meetings when requested.
- Attend tradeshows and conferences on behalf of the GenAssist group.
- Coordinate training and educational opportunities for the GenAssist group.
- Other duties as required.
- Experience working with NGOs, farmers, and farm groups.
- Knowledge and practice of sustainable agriculture including livestock management practices; familiarity with Holistic Management (HM) is preferable.
- Experience with marketing and sales.
- Strong written / verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Must possess excellent organizational skills, including budgeting and financial record keeping.
- Computer skills in word processing, database management, and electronic communications, preferably Microsoft Office. Web design / management skills are an asset.
- Ability to establish and sustain relationships with buyers.
- Familiarity with quality control mechanisms.
- Knowledge and practice of participatory community development is helpful.
- Ability to facilitate professional development for the GenAssist group.
- Ability to practice logical and independent judgment to resolve problems in any given situation.
- Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
- This employee must maintain a valid driver’s license and be able to drive a motorized vehicle.
- Ability to work flexible schedule.
- Sensitivity in working with multiple cultures and belief systems.

The GenAssist project is a partnership amongst Saskatchewan farm families, Genesis Land Conservancy, and Heifer International Canada to initiate and sustain a ‘value chain’ in a profitable, ethical and sustainable food production enterprise.
The project is looking for a talented and enthusiastic individual to manage the marketing and business development of a Saskatchewan-focused livestock products enterprise. The ideal candidate has a mix of education and experience in one or more of the following areas: small business and value-chain development, marketing, sustainable agriculture (grass-based livestock), participatory community and/or economic development.
